Our Grand Opening was on Thursday 26th April 2012 and we welcomed all those who came to joine us for canapes and drinks to celebrate this event. It was a great evening.

How it began…

In November 2006, Kalk Bay Books opened its doors in the historic Klipkantientjie building on Kalk Bay’s Main Road.

Since then, the bookshop has become a gathering point for readers and writers to browse, buy and talk about books. Key to Kalk Bay Books’ success has been the regular events hosted in the shop – book launches, discussions, lectures and readings have attracted local residents and book lovers from further afield.

Kalk Bay Books owner Ann Donald, opened a new business in the Klipkantientjie premises – The Annex Restaurant in March 2010.

The restaurant is a popular venue for small celebratory functions (up to 40 people), and has successfully hosted mini-conferences and business meetings. Speak to our manager, Anne Chen, to discuss venue hire fees, catering costs and any additional requirements.

The Annex is fully licensed. You are welcome to bring your own wine – a R30 per bottle corkage fee is applicable.

Choose from four dining area options, to suit your mood or the weather.

The Annex Library, with its cosy fireplace, is perfect for indoor dining (and comes complete with its own mystery to be unraveled). Guests can also enjoy relaxed meals on The Annex Verandah, at a table in The Annex Courtyard, and the fantastic harbour view from under the tree on The Annex Terrace.

Drawing on the heritage of the 98-year-old buildings, the visual experience of the restaurant is as much a drawcard as the food. The Annex is the original name for the restaurant buildings. Designed by architect John Parker and built in 1913 as an annex to the old Masonic Hotel and then the Majestic Hotel, The Annex is a graceful and peaceful escape from the bustle of Main Road. In its new guise, the restaurant reflects the Edwardian period of its origins, with a contemporary twist brought to visual reality by paint-effects specialists Occulus.

The restaurant can also be accessed from Kalk Bay Books, and collaborates with the bookshop for book events, while also presenting its own selection of literary and music programmes in The Annex Library.

His new book is a gripping novel with an unstoppable plot that exposes the religious tensions that threaten to tear society apart when the body of a Muslim boy is found in a synagogue, mutilated in what looks like a ritual sacrifice, and Inspector Eberard Februarie is called in to solve the case. As news of the murder quickly becomes public, a storm of religious violence threatens to engulf Cape Town. Andrew Brown practises as an advocate in Cape Town, and is a reservist sergeant in the South African Police Service. He is the author of four novels: Inyenzi, about the Rwandan genocide, and the crime novels Coldsleep Lullaby, Refuge and Solace. In Street Blues he wrote about his experiences as a police reservist. Andrew won the 2006 Sunday Times Fiction Prize for Coldsleep Lullaby, and his work has been shortlisted for the Alan Paton Award and the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize (Africa Region).
